The Reference State has two community phases. Community phase 1.1 is dominated by perennial bunchgrasses (Salina wildrye) and black sagebrush. Community phase 1.2 is dominated by perennial bunch grasses. The community pathway between the two phases is disturbance that removes the shrub cover, such as fire.

Description
Plant communities in the Current Potential State can include native and acclimatized, naturalized and invasive non-native species. This state is irreversibly changed from the Reference State because these non-native species will now remain a permanent part of the community. Cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum) has been found to dominant the interspaces both before and after fire.
